Welcome to Wishlist After Dark! I'm Penny, here with Marty Dazzle in the sparkly blazer and Sunny, who's already wagging. Marty, what've you got? Folks, it's Codenames, the 2nd Edition, from Czech Games Edition! It's a word-clue party game, and it's the perfect gift for families and friends who love a game night. Ooh, I love this one! Two rival teams, and each team's spymaster gives a one-word clue plus a number.
Then your team hunts for its agents among 25 codename cards. But steer clear of the other team's agents, the innocent bystanders and, oh no, the assassin! Okay, Sunny, we know it's a classic. So what's actually new this time? A revised word list, new art, a simpler rulebook, and an insert that keeps all the pieces organized right in the box. But wait, there's more! Look at this number, folks: 200 cards with 400 codenames, plus 40 key cards!
And the little card stand's made of R E-Wood! Picture unwrapping it and setting up the grid right away. Oh, and a game takes about 15 minutes. Fifteen minutes! So it's one more round, then one more, then one more. Here's the catch, Marty. It's for 4 to 8 plus players, and buyers say it really shines with a bigger group. Wait, so what about couples, Penny? Buyers point pairs who mostly play as two to the separate Codenames: Duet.
And it's ages 10 and up, so skip it for the littlest ones. Good news, though: no batteries needed! And it's designed by Vlaada Chvátil. Fair. Buyers call it a modern party-game classic, and the 2nd Edition from 2025 is the current version. My score? Eight point two out of ten. Penny, that's stingy! I'm at nine point one, because it gets the whole crowd shouting clues. I'm at eight point eight, Marty, for the new art and that tidy insert!
That makes the After Dark Score eight point seven out of ten, number five of the thirteen toys we've ranked. Buy it if your crowd's four or more. Folks, the link's on our site and in the description. See you next time!
